Traditionally, cultures and legislations have considered water as a fundamental right, a common good that should be at the service of all. But this idea is beginning to falter as water multinationals emerge, subject to investment funds, which want to get their hands on this essential resource for life to make it profitable.
On December 7, 2020, water was listed on the stock exchange. A common good, considered to be in the public domain, became a stock market value. But the struggle for one of the most essential natural resources for survival, along with air, began a long time ago. Multinationals are eager to manage the liquid element and put a price on it operate all over the world, planning water highways or water banks. The voice that most condemns this desire to privatize a public good in Spain, essential for life, is that of Pilar Esquinas.
Pilar Esquinas is a lawyer specialized in water, environmental and agricultural law. She is the founder of Aguaiuris, an organization of water users and consumers, which fights so that this natural resource and this fundamental right of all living beings does not pass into the hands of a few. Here you can see the talk she gave at the Boulebard kiosk in Donostia on April 8, 2023, organized by DonostiakoMizelioa: "Water has an owner and it is not you".
